Even celebrities have accidents on quad bikes or ATVs, and they include Rick Mayall and Ozzy Osbourne. Both suffered serious injuries whilst driving their quad bikes on their own land, and both were not wearing the essential helmet, obviously which should be worn to prevent head injuries. In recent years, there has been a heavy increase in the purchase of quads because they are such a versatile machine.
But beware, they are, in the wrong hands a lethal machine. A couple of years ago, I arrived at a business premises to see the owner driving a quad with 1 leg, with the other leg stretched out encased in a plaster caste, and the customary dog sitting on the back. I have also visited premises and seen 8 year old children driving them. Well I am sorry, but these machines maim and kill. They have powerful cc engines, and when driven in situations for instance down a slope on a wet day, with a trailer on the back which is over capacity, then the obvious happens and the next thing the driver is upside down, with the whole weight of the machine on top of him. In these accidents, the driver is mostly on their own, and could be in that position of serious injury for several hours, or at least until someone realises he is missing.Nowadays many landscape and land management companies also use the ATVs or Quad Bikes with implements and Loads to spray pesticides, herbicides, fungicides etc., They are also used in woodlands and now what is said to be a growing "leisure industry" with Quad Bike Parks. |
